Abstract
This paper argues that the economic case for land reform in Bangladesh, contrary to frequent claims, is not well-established. A ceiling-cum- redistributive land reform, which is usually advocated, is not likely to be conducive to a prosperous agriculture. The only likely outcome of the proposed reform policy is the attenuation or destruction of the rural elite and the growth of a weak peasantry dependent upon state patronage.
